SUBJECT OVERVIEW
All students are required to successfully complete at least one semester of stage 1 or 2 mathematics to meet the SACE numeracy requirement. This subject is designed to be an accessible option for students to meet this requirement in year 10. On successful completion of this subject, students will have achieved the SACE numeracy requirement. Stage 1 Numeracy should only be chosen by students who are certain that they will not continue studying mathematics, as the subject does not lead to a mathematics pathway in year 11 or 12.
Stage 1 Numeracy offers students the opportunity to extend their mathematical skills in ways that apply to practical problem-solving in everyday and workplace contexts. Students apply their mathematics to diverse settings, including everyday calculations, financial management, business applications, measurement and geometry, and statistics in social contexts.
In Stage 1 Numeracy there is an emphasis on developing students’ computational skills and expanding their ability to apply their mathematical skills in flexible and resourceful ways.
This subject is intended for students planning to pursue a career in a range of trades or vocations.
Topics may include:
- Calculations, time, and ratio
- Earning and spending
