Pre-Requisite: This compulsory Science course builds on knowledge and skills developed in year 9 and incorporates key ideas and associated standards of the Australian Curriculum.

SUBJECT OVERVIEW

Students continue to cycle through the different facets of science to gain an understanding of the many science pathways available in the senior school.

Students will begin to refine their experimental and scientific communication skills in preparation for SACE. The course provides significant opportunity for students to broaden their appreciation of the integration of the various sciences.

Students deepen their understanding of the interaction between science and society by investigating how the values and needs of contemporary society can influence the focus of scientific research and how scientific understanding is contestable and is refined over time.

The history, development, use and nature of science in the following topics:

  • Genetics and heredity
  • Evolution
  • Periodic table
  • Reactions and rates
  • Describing motions
  • Force
  • Structure of the universe

ASSESSMENT

Students are assessed against the Science Australian Curriculum achievement standards.
These may include options such as:

  • Practicals/investigations
  • Research tasks or projects (group or individual)
  • Topic tests

Various excursion opportunities may be offered to students which may incur additional costs.
