Pre-Requisite: This compulsory Science course builds on knowledge and skills developed in year 8 and incorporates key ideas and associated standards of the Australian Curriculum for this level.

SUBJECT OVERVIEW

Students continue to cycle through the different facets of Science to gain an understanding of the many Science based pathways that are available in the Senior School. Students deepen their understanding of the interaction between science and society by investigating how technological advances are often linked to scientific discoveries and how advances in science can affect people’s lives, including generating new career opportunities. The course provides significant opportunity for integrated STEM learning to occur throughout the year.

The history, development, use and nature of science in the following topics.

  • Body systems and homeostasis
  • Sexual and asexual reproduction
  • Carbon cycle
  • Wave and particle model of energy
  • Energy conservation
  • Atomic structure and radioactivity
  • Chemical reactions

ASSESSMENT

Students are assessed against the Science Australian Curriculum achievement standards.
These may include options such as:

  • Practicals/investigations
  • Research tasks or projects (group or individual)
  • Topic tests

Various excursion opportunities may be offered to students which may incur additional costs.
