Pre-Requisite: Successful completion of year 8 Japanese

SUBJECT OVERVIEW

The study of Japanese is an important tool of communication and an essential part of understanding Australia’s place in the world. Studying Japanese provides students with the opportunity to gain an international perspective by developing a cultural understanding through language acquisition. Students are exposed to a range of authentic experiences; participating in cultural exchanges through hosting or interacting with Japanese study tours; in class activities; and attending excursions/incursions. They will develop their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities through learning to connect with others in Japanese and recognizing the sounds/sights of the Japanese language.

Students will develop communication skills in written, listening and spoken formats.

  • School
  • Daily routine
  • Hobbies and free time
  • Going places
  • Festivals and sightseeing
  • Eating out
  • Invitations
  • Continual use of the hiragana, katakana writing systems
  • Introduction of more complex kanji

ASSESSMENT

Students are assessed against the Japanese Australian curriculum achievement standards:

  • Receptive modes: listening, speaking, reading and writing
  • Productive modes: listening, speaking, reading and writing
