11 Society and Culture

SACE Stage 1: 10 Credits / 1 Semester / Humanities

Pre-Requisite:  An achievement level of ‘C’ or better in year 10 english and/or global learning subject is highly recommended. It is important to note this subject involves extended writing, active research and class discussions. 

SUBJECT OVERVIEW

Students explore and analyse the interactions of people, societies, cultures and environments. They learn how social, political, historical, environmental, economic and cultural factors affect different societies; and how people function and communicate in and across cultural groups.

Through their study of Society and Culture, students develop the ability to influence their own futures, by developing skills, values and understandings that enable effective participation in contemporary society.

Topics may include

There are a variety of topics that can be studied in the semester, for example:

  • Current social or cultural issue
  • Forces for social change or continuity
  • The media
  • Popular culture
  • Power and authority in society
  • Prejudice and discrimination
  • Contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies
  • Societies in rural and urban Australia
  • Environment and sustainability

ASSESSMENT

The following assessment types enable students to demonstrate their learning in Stage 1 Society and Culture:

  • Assessment type 1: sources analysis
  • Assessment type 2: group activity
  • Assessment type 3: investigation

Students will be assessed against the SACE Stage 1 Society and Culture performance standards. These include:

  • Knowledge and understanding
  • Investigation and analysis
  • Collaboration
  • Communication
