SUBJECT OVERVIEW

This course has a ‘traditional’ materials focus working with solid timbers. Students design, produce and assemble a product that employs traditional design principles, production and assembly techniques. Students may explore a range of materials while further developing their skills in the safe use of selected portable tools and fixed machines. Students develop a design folio that includes their investigation, planning, designs and costing. Students will further develop Computer Aided Design (CAD) skills in this course. Students investigate and discuss legal, economic, ethics or sustainability issues that relate to their designed solution. 

Topics may include

  • Safe use of portable power tools
  • Safe use of static machines
  • Joint and frame construction
  • Assembly and finishing techniques
  • 3D design and modelling using Autodesk Fusion 360

ASSESSMENT

This subject consists of two assessment types:

  • Specialised skills tasks – 30%
  • Design process & product – 70%

Students are assessed against the design, technology and engineering SACE performance standards:

  • Investigation and analysis
  • Design, development and planning
  • Production
  • Evaluation
