11 Essential English

SUBJECT OVERVIEW

In Essential English students respond to and create texts in and for a range of personal, social, cultural, community, and/or workplace contexts.

Students understand and interpret information, ideas, and perspectives in texts and consider ways in which language choices are used to create meaning.
It provides a pathway to complete Stage 2 Essential English. The subject is designed to meet SACE literacy requirements. It suits a range of students including those planning to pursue a career in a range of trades or vocational pathways.

There are two assessment types* students must complete in order to successfully finish the course:

  • Assessment type 1: responding to texts
  • Assessment type 2: creating texts

* One assessment must be an oral/multimodal


Students will complete 8 assessments for a 20-credit course.

Students are assessed against the SACE performance standards for Stage 1 Essential English:

  • Communication
  • Comprehension
  • Analysis
  • Application

Additional Information

A full year of English is a compulsory component of the SACE and provides students with the 20 credits needed for the compulsory Literacy Requirement of SACE.

Stage 1 Essential English will also focus on preparing students for Stage 2 Essential English.
