SUBJECT OVERVIEW

This course has a ‘contemporary’ materials focus involving the use of CAD and CNC manufacturing. Students design, produce and assemble a product that employs contemporary design principles, production and assembly techniques, while exploring a range of materials. Students use CAD to plan, design and make their product. Students develop a design folio that includes their investigation, planning, designs and costing. Students will be instructed in the safe use of selected portable tools and fixed machines.

Topics may include

  • Safe use of static machines
  • Joint and frame construction
  • Assembly and finishing techniques
  • 3D design and modelling using Autodesk Fusion 360
  • Safe use of portable power tools
  • Traditional construction techniques may also be used throughout the semester.

ASSESSMENT

Students are assessed through formative and summative assessments in the form of Design Folio's and individual assessment tasks that cover the Design & Technology Australian Curriculum achievement standards within the following content descriptors:

  • Knowledge & understanding - Materials and technologies specialisations
  • Processess & production skills including the following:
    • Investigating and defining
    • Generating and designing
    • Producing and implementing
    • Evaluating
    • Collaborating and managing
