SUBJECT OVERVIEW

Design and Technology students will build on the knowledge, understanding and skills developed in years 7 and 8 through a variety of technologies, using a design thinking mindset to complete a range of theory and practical tasks.

Students will use the design process to design products, navigate systems, think critically, innovatively, creatively to problem solve. Students will develop confidence as critical users of technologies through designing products and producing designed solutions that meet the needs and wants that they develop through critical analysis.

Students will produce physical products using CAM methods such as 3D printing and Laser cutting as well as hand and power tools.

Topics may include

  • 2D technical hand sketching
  • 2D vector drawing
  • Computer-aided design (Autodesk Fusion 360)
  • 3D printing
  • Laser engraving and cutting
  • Electronics and coding
  • Multimedia presentation
  • Robotics
  • Materials (wood)

ASSESSMENT

Students are assessed through formative and summative assessments in the form of Design Folios and individual assessments tasks that cover the Design and Technology Australian curriculum achievement standards within the following content descriptors:

  • Knowledge and understanding - materials and technologies specialisations
  • Processes and production skills including the following:
    • Investigating and defining
    • Generating and designing
    • Producing and implementing
    • Evaluating
    • Collaborating and managing
