Recommended Background: This compulsory Science course builds on knowledge and skills developed in year 7 and incorporates key ideas and associated standards of the Australian Curriculum for this level.

SUBJECT OVERVIEW

As a foundation for a lifelong appreciation of the world around us and how it works, students cycle through various areas of study to gain an appreciation for the different facets of science. Students also gain an understanding of the interaction between science and society by investigating how scientific knowledge has changed peoples’ understanding of the world and how solutions to contemporary issues can be found using science and technology. This course provides significant opportunity for integrated learning to occur throughout the year.

The history, development, use and nature of science in the following topics.

  • Cells, organs and organ systems
  • Elements, compounds and mixtures
  • Energy transfers and transformations
  • Physical and chemical changes in reactions
  • Plate tectonics

ASSESSMENT

Students are assessed against the Science Australian Curriculum achievement standards.


These may include options such as:

  • Practicals/investigations
  • Research tasks or projects (group or individual)
  • Topic tests
